There's a lot to celebrate in retirement. That was the message from Living Choice Wellness Coordinator, Sarah Fox, at the annual Ploughman’s Lunch for Living Choice Woodcroft clients on 25th August.
The message was also reinforced by residents, Bernadette Chetcuti and Rita Dunlop who spoke of their full and active lives at the village. And if you needed extra help later, Living Choice Home Care services were available too, said SA Home Care Case Manager, Sharyn Williams.
Eighteen clients and 15 Resident Ambassadors attended the Ploughman’s Lunch and enjoyed an excellent spread prepared by the team at Let’s Eat Catering. Sales manager, Katherine Stacey, said everyone was especially impressed with Sarah’s talk on retirement and wellness.
Sarah said it was no coincidence that the Spanish word for retirement is "Jubilacion". “A recent survey showed that people living in retirement villages are five times more likely to participate in social activities, report four times better quality of life and a 100% increase in cognitive function. This makes it a fantastic lifestyle choice,” she said.
“As pointed out by the previous speakers, the main reasons for choosing retirement village living are Community – being part of something; Independence – privacy or company when you want it; Security, safety, trust and the `lock and leave’ lifestyle, allowing you to go away with confidence.
“The village community here at Woodcroft are wise and have wisdom to share, are inspired to try new things, acquire new skills, try new activities, have fun together, build caring relationships and have experience to contribute to the community,” she added.
Sarah pointed out moving into a retirement village was not “stepping back” but was more a celebration of new-found freedom. “Freedom from caring what people think and the freedom to step up into something smaller, more suitable for your new lifestyle.”
Reflecting on the history of the Wellness Centre at Woodcroft, Sarah said the centre had grown to a team of 16 practitioners and instructors offering clinics and classes from Podiatry, Physiotherapy, Hearing Health, Reflexology, Massage and Dental to Strength for Life and Chair Yoga.
“Having fun, keeping well and feeling part of something is a common theme for villagers and the wellness team alike. If you do need services, these are also available on site - help with cleaning, making meals, etc which Sharyn will be able to help you with. The Wellness Centre and the Village are a perfect match with common bonds and values. So don’t retire – celebrate. Retirement – Jublilacion – Let’s Celebrate!
