Community Spirit Shines Through at Living Choice Woodcroft in 2024
Living Choice Woodcroft residents came together throughout 2024 for a series of heartwarming events, bringing joy, camaraderie, and a sense of community to the village. From Australia Day celebrations to Remembrance Day tributes, these occasions highlighted the spirit of togetherness that defines the community.
Australia Day Celebration
Australia Day at Living Choice Woodcroft was a day of fun, food, and music. The Social Club hosted a free BBQ lunch for all residents, with a delicious spread that brought everyone together. Following lunch, the Village Singers treated the crowd to a concert filled with beloved Australian songs. Doug Tilley brought some light-hearted entertainment with a playful game of cricket, and Glynis Rock entertained the crowd as “Sadie the Cleaning Lady,” much to the delight of around 150 residents. The event was a perfect blend of music, food, and community spirit.
St. Patrick’s Day Celebration
St. Patrick’s Day was another highlight of the year, with the community celebrating in style. Glynis Rock, a resident and volunteer, prepared a scrumptious baked potato lunch, served by a group of eager residents. Following the meal, the afternoon was filled with lively performances by the Irish Dancers, who kept the crowd entertained from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The festive atmosphere, full of Irish cheer, was a memorable experience for all who attended.
Melbourne Cup Luncheon
Melbourne Cup was another event that brought the residents together for a day of delicious food and friendly competition. Residents were excited to try their luck with sweepstakes tickets, and the best-dressed male and female were rewarded with special gifts from the Social Club. About 150 residents attended, donning their finest attire and enjoying the races without having to travel far. The event was yet another success for the community.
Remembrance Day
In a touching tribute, Living Choice Woodcroft marked Remembrance Day by welcoming Mrs. Hesling’s Reception Class and their Year 5 Buddies from Reynella East College. The children sang two moving songs, “Can You Hear Australia’s Heroes Marching?” and “The Green and the Gold,” while demonstrating great enthusiasm and respect for the occasion. This was the third time the children visited the village to practice and perform, an effort that was deeply appreciated by the residents.
Reverend Christine Woolner stepped in to conduct the service, which focused on the symbolism of the Flanders Poppy and the poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae. Doug Tilley read “One Thousand Men Are Walking,” a poignant poem by Joshua Dyer. The wreath, laid by Tony Calhoun, ex-Royal Australian Navy, honoured those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The service ended with the playing of both the British and Australian National Anthems. The adults enjoyed a morning tea while reflecting on the significance of the day. Many took the opportunity to find their family’s name on the Poppy Wall of Remembrance.
Woodcroft Christmas Celebration
Though many residents spent Christmas Day with their families, Living Choice Woodcroft hosted an early celebration on December 15. The festive menu included turducken, roast pork with pig-in-blankets, roast potatoes, vegetables, salads, and assorted Christmas desserts. Residents were treated to a performance by Stewart Allan, who performed for the afternoon. The day culminated with “Carols under the Stars,” setting the stage for a joyful holiday season.
As we reflect on these events, it’s clear that 2024 was a year of celebration, remembrance, and connection at Living Choice Woodcroft. The village continues to foster a warm, welcoming environment where residents can share in these special moments together. Looking ahead, there’s no doubt that 2025 will bring even more opportunities for fun, friendship, and community spirit.
