Deepwater Court residents rally for Women’s Shelter

COVID-19 may have temporarily curtailed some of the regular activities at Living Choice Deepwater Court, however it has not dampened the enthusiasm of the village’s Knitting Group which still meets every Wednesday afternoon in the community centre.

Following social distancing guidelines, members of the group gather to knit squares which are then crocheted together to make blankets. The latest batch has been donated to the Women’s Shelter in Somersby.

Glenys Aitken, who retired to Deepwater Court from Sydney 12 years ago, said the knitting group had been going for at least six years. “In the last three years, we have made around 75 blankets which have been donated to people in need. In January this year, we gave 12 blankets to NSW bushfire victims.”

Glenys said the squares were knitted with new yarn purchased with money provided by the village’s Residents’ Committee. “The money is raised through fundraisers such as bar sales, raffles at dinners etc.” She added that the group members welcomed the opportunity to “have a chat” and enjoy some social interaction during their knitting sessions.

Although some restrictions are in force at the village, residents are still able to meet for card games, colouring-in and can enjoy swimming in the indoor heated pool (two people at a time).
