Memorable Australia Day event at Fullarton raises funds for Variety SA

Australia Day at Living Choice Fullarton is always a very special day, not only providing a thoroughly enjoyable event for residents but raising much-needed funds for Variety SA, a charity assisting disadvantaged children. For the past three years, it has been organised by the inimitable Sue Pearce with the help of many willing volunteers, and this year’s event – attended by around 100 people - raised $5,300.

Sue has spent the last 16 years raising funds for Variety SA and has received an OAM for her efforts, having raised an incredible $1,75-million. She’s the first to admit that she could not do it without the fantastic support of her partner, Rod Watson, many local businesses, friends and of course, fellow residents.

“We had so many helpers at the Australia Day breakfast – the Men’s Shed members cooked the breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausages and tomatoes and many other residents assisted with making toast, tea, coffee, pancakes with strawberries and cream and serving the French champagne on arrival – yes, champagne from France which was kindly donated by a friend,” she said.

The breakfast was not just about eating and drinking, however. There were wonderful recitals by Joan Butler and Ross Tilley, a moving medley of songs by a Scottish Piper and a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem by two talented grandchildren of residents.

Prior to Christmas, Sue was madly selling Christmas cherries in aid of Variety SA and now she and Rod are preparing for Variety’s next fundraiser, the 4WD Adventure, a six-day trip taking 4WD vehicles off the bitumen and onto bush tracks, sand dunes, fire trails and country dirt roads from 21^st to 26^th March.
