NSW Rural Fire Brigade volunteers test their skills at Glenhaven

For the past 68 years, the volunteers from the Glenhaven Rural Fire Brigade have provided a vital firefighting service for Glenhaven and its surrounding communities. One of those communities is Living Choice Glenhaven, a retirement village comprising 236 homes, and every year, the Brigade holds a realistic training scenario there, providing a valuable opportunity for the volunteers to test their skills.

This year, the fire scenario was held on the night of 20th August with fire tankers responding to Villa 74 (an empty villa currently being refurbished). A structure fire was simulated in this villa, with firefighters entering the building with breathing apparatus to rescue the occupants and extinguish the fire. The village’s fire wardens also took part in the exercise, guiding the fire personnel to the villa where “smoke” was pouring out of the front door.

Mitchell Blue, the Brigade’s Community Engagement Officer, said the annual exercise was a vital part of the volunteers’ training and he praised village manager, Gail Eyres, and the village fire wardens for their co-operation.

Mitchell said the Glenhaven Rural Fire Brigade was part of NSW Rural Fire Service, The Hills District and was made up of dedicated members of the Glenhaven and surrounding community. “We assist the community during times of emergency; particularly bush, grass and structure fires along with motor vehicle accidents and storm damage. We not only assist in the local area but also interstate and overseas. Our fundraising assists with equipment, improvements and the operation of the Brigade.”

He encouraged members of the community to come along and meet the Brigade and see if they would like to volunteer. He also invited everyone to the Get Ready Weekend/Open Day event which will be held on Sunday 15th September at 9.30am at Glenhaven Station on Glenhaven Road.
