Residents embrace activities at Leisure Lea Gardens

When Linda Savige, Village Manager at Leisure Lea Gardens, noticed that the table tennis table was sitting idle in the village’s Atrium area, she decided to challenge the residents to a table tennis competition to revive interest in the sport. It worked, with nine residents turning up to have a go and four finalists, Male Loau, Wilma van de Veen, John Mutch and Linda making the finals. John was declared the winner, followed by Wilma. Due to the popularity of the first challenge, further competitions are planned.

Linda said that while residents were very diligent in maintaining social distancing, they were not prepared to discontinue all activities. “The only activity that has not resumed is Happy Hour,” said Linda. “We’re still having indoor bowls, darts, exercise classes, Zumba Gold, trivia, movie and ice-cream events, craft, bingo and on-site shopping. Our dining-room is open too, serving three meals daily in a COVID-Safe environment.”

Linda said the regular activities were helping to keep residents socially connected, which was important for their mental wellbeing. “Being in a retirement village, where you’re surrounded by caring neighbours and staff members, is really important during these difficult times and many of our residents have expressed gratitude that they are here and not living alone.”
