Take the time to smell the roses

Broadwater Court resident, Liz Long, with the Anzac Day quilt she donated to the village.

Liz Long of Living Choice Broadwater Court is looking on the bright side, despite having to celebrate her birthday alone. She’s also suggested that Living Choice residents could become Pen Pals.

People are frequently at their ugliest when they are frightened. But there are those that have surprised and delighted me.

It was my birthday on 31st March – spent alone – as we now must.  I had heard a kookaburra laughing before I got out of bed, saw the lovely Autumn flowers starting to open in my garden, managed to get down to the waterfront and saw a blue wren with his three little Jennies and a family of five black swans paddling along. HOORAY! Life is still going on all around me.

I bought an ice-cream to celebrate and strangers smiled at my obvious pleasure. Even some of the residents asked how I was after a bad fall.

Don’t let things get you down! Keep to your daily routine and structure; focus and be mindful, move, stretch, eat healthily; think about what little unexpected things you may do for someone else and try to keep a smile on your face. Be thankful we live in the LUCKY COUNTRY. Focus and keep an active mind. Be aware and keep safe.

Editor’s note: Liz Long is an Accredited quilting teacher but has been unable to do much quilting for around five years due to having Lymphoedema in both arms, which restricts her 'free-motion' machine embroidery work. However, last year she made a lovely hanging quilt (pictured above) to celebrate 100 years since Anzac.  She donated it to the Broadwater Court Village, but with the Anzac ceremonies being cancelled, she is looking after it at present.

During the enforced time at home, she recently made a small 20cm x 20cm 3D Art Quilt (see photo below) for a friend who was celebrating her 79th birthday and posted it off to her. Well done, Liz!
