Triple celebration for Glenhaven’s Enid Hewson
Today, 11th October 2021, is a special day for Living Choice Glenhaven’s first resident, Enid Hewson – it’s her 80th birthday, her grandson’s 26th birthday and it’s “Freedom Day” in NSW – the day Stage 1 of the Roadmap begins and some restrictions are eased. “It certainly is my lucky day,” said Enid.
Although no big party has been planned, due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 restrictions, Enid’s eldest daughter, Kerry and her husband Michael visited her this morning, laden with presents. Regional Manager, Gail Eyres, and long-time village staff member, Jane Fisher, also popped in to take her flowers and balloons.
On Wednesday, Enid’s youngest daughter, Leonie, will visit from the Northern Beaches with her grandchildren, including Matthew with whom she shares a birthday. “Due to the restrictions, I haven’t been able to see them since May and I am so looking forward to their visit,” she said.
Since moving into the village with her late husband, John on 14th September 2004, Enid has been very involved with many activities, especially the Craft Group, as its Convenor. During that time, she has arranged the delivery of hundreds of blankets, scarves and beanies to charitable organisations.
“Members of the group have been knitting at home throughout the lockdown and we now have 20 blankets ready for delivery. Soon we will be able to knit together. We have a big Craft Group so when we had to socially distance last time, Gail organised a bigger space upstairs in the leisure centre. I don’t know what we would do without Gail – she is a gem. In fact, all the staff members and the gardeners are lovely,” she added.
Enid is looking forwarding to socialising again and spending time in the leisure centre. “My cat Chloe will probably not like it though because I’ve been at home all the time and she has been terribly spoilt!”
As the first resident, Enid has taken part in some memorable village events, including the 10th Anniversary in September 2014, when she helped to plant a commemorative tree. Seven years later, she is still going strong and has no intention of slowing down anytime soon. Happy 80th birthday, Enid!
