Head Gardener Joel Perez and his assistant Rob Strawbridge are much-loved staff members at Leisure Lea Gardens and no wonder, as they have created award-winning village gardens that bring so much pleasure to the residents every day.
Residents love sitting in the courtyard, surrounded by magnificent roses and flowering azaleas, and it was this area in particular that caught the eye of the judges in the City of Ryde’s Spring Garden Competition. There are more than 50 rose bushes at Leisure Lea Gardens and the judges said they were the best they had seen.
The judges were also impressed with the thoughtfully designed garden extensions at the rear of the village and awarded Leisure Lea Gardens Best Commercial Garden in this year’s Spring Garden Competition.
The competition is personally judged by a panel of garden judges and horticulture professionals and the entries are judged on maintenance, design and the level of knowledge and enthusiasm displayed by the gardeners. The village has its own propagation area and Joel and Rob’s enthusiasm certainly rubs off on the residents who love to encourage them.
It is the second year in a row that the village has won the award and staff and residents threw a surprise party for Joel and Rob to recognise their efforts.
